If you live in the UK, your back yard, back garden, or the area to the rear of your house you’re not quite sure how best to name, is a tricky space to utilise.
Typically, we only get to enjoy our gardens properly for about half the year, if we’re lucky. But what if there was a way to transform your garden into a space you can use more regularly?
Failing that, what if you could do something to your garden which at the very least turns it into a space that you’ll happily look out on throughout the year with admiration?
Here are five ways to repurpose your back yard.
1. An outdoor gym
If you’re an avid gym goer or want to get fit while at home, an outdoor gym in your back yard could be the perfect way to top up those fitness levels.
There’s plenty of weather-resistant gym equipment you can buy, but you can be just as resourceful by repurposing handles for pull-up bars and old tyres for your own HIIT-style home sessions!
2. A water feature
The perennial water feature is an oldie but a goodie when it comes to back garden and back yard refurbishments.
Water features remain one of the simplest ways to make use of and enhance unused areas. There are now a huge number of designs you can choose from which work for spaces of all shapes and sizes.
They cost a bit to install and run, but they’re a great addition if you have the budget.
3. A vegetable or herb garden
If your outdoor space has a large wall or boundary fence, why not use that area as a vegetable or herb garden?
‘Grow your own’ is something which is taking UK gardeners (and non-gardeners) by storm. And there’s a good reason for that; it’s an incredibly addictive past-time, and can result in a tonne of great, fresh additions to your daily cooking.
4. A fire pit
There’s nothing like sitting around an open fire, so if your back yard is big enough, why not install a circular fire pit in the middle of it?
A permanent fire pit will get plenty of use during the summer months, but it’ll probably see some action during the winter, too.
Certainly, there’s no better way to entertain guests than an evening outside, under the stars toasting marshmallows – in your own back yard!
5. A handy pathway
If you want to do something ultra-simple with your backyard, you can do a lot worse than implementing a pathway.
In doing so, you may convert a previously unused area into something far more useful. There are loads of options when it comes to slabs these days, and you can even get creative by planting seasonal flowers around the pathway, to really enhance your garden.
Wrapping up
Make 2020 the year you finally transform the forgotten part of your back garden into a useful space that you’ll venture into all year round.
We hope our tips above give you plenty of back yard inspiration!
