Finding cool home design inspiration for 2020 isn’t easy – unless you try one of the brilliant apps that can help you out.

If, however, you’ve exhausted that option, we’d like to help.

Why? Because the start of a new year is a brilliant time to make some changes to your home that won’t necessarily break the bank. By relying on some of the latest tech and home design trends, you can make 2020 the year your house really comes alive.

Here are five cool home designs (both techy and non-techy) which we think will inspire you.

1. Smart doorbells

Once a thing of science fiction, smart doorbells that include cameras which can beam images directly to your smartphone are rapidly entering homes across the nation.

If you’ve been to a friend’s house recently, you might have seen one in action, but 2020 is probably the year we’ll see them in more and more homes. And why not? They increase security by deterring burglars and you can have a laugh with mates when they turn up by making noises through the built-in speakers.

2. Funky kitchen decor

The era of the bright-white minimalist kitchen is apparently on the way out, with more people opting for funky decor in the most popular room in many homes.

If your kitchen is in need of a cool update next year, rather than spending a fortune on new units or a brand new kitchen, update the walls with funky wallpaper or that of your own design.

For an equally contemporary but less startling effect, try opting for light greys and blues instead of all-white walls.

3. Smart lighting

Just like the smart doorbell mentioned earlier, lighting that turns itself on and off at the tap of a smartphone, no matter where the homeowner happens to be, used to be pure sci-fi.

Not anymore. The cost of smart lighting has reduced considerably in recent years, making it affordable for most people.

Start small in 2020 by buying a couple of smart lightbulbs to place in various rooms and, if they float your boat, add to them gradually until you have a home that can be lit from anywhere and in a variety of soothing colours.

4. Dinner party settings

2020 is expected to mark the return of the formal dining room, but that doesn’t mean you need to create a space that’s boring.

Far from it. If you have the room, why not make the dining space in your home a party setting that can be configured quickly for when you have people over?

Add eye-catching artwork to the walls and a corner drinks cabinet, and you’ll have everything you need to party the night away in the comfort of your own home.

5. Smart speakers

If tip 4 got you excited about hosting more gatherings at your home next year, you’ll need a decent music system to keep everyone entertained.

Smart speaker setups are now more affordable than ever and can be purchased from a range of manufacturers. And, by placing just one or two small speakers within your home, you can enjoy room-filling sound from your favourite music services, all controllable from your smartphone.

Wrapping up

Have we got you excited about updating your home in 2020? Thought so!

Which of the cool design ideas above has got you most excited, though? Whichever one has floated your boat, make sure it becomes a new year’s resolution to turn into a reality.
